28 june — 15 september 2024
Curator: José Luís Neves, Luís Pinto Nunes, Susana Lourenço Marques
“Portugal – Year Zero: photography books of the revolution” is an exhibition curated by José Luís Neves, Luís Pinto Nunes and Susana Lourenço Marques, which presents an extensive selection of books, featuring images taken by Portuguese and foreign photographers, which reflects the publishing boom after Portugal’s 1974 revolution.
The core of the exhibition is comprised by books that explores the revolutionary process in progress, the counter-revolutionary movements that emerged during this period, the documentation of street art and protest practices, the process of land reform and the role played by women. Special attention is also paid to international photographers who visited Portugal during this period, including Jochen Moll, Guy Le Querrec, Tano D’Amico or Jason Lauré.
This set of images from the second half of the 20th century is complemented by works by Portuguese authors who developed their work based on a selection of the photography books on display, such as Pedro Augusto’s work in the book Uma Certa Maneira de Cantar (a certain way of singing, 1977), Dinis Santos’ Casas Clandestinas (clandestine houses) of the Portuguese Communist Party, Tiago Madaleno’s work, based on White wall in Alentejo (1977), or iteration of Lisa Santos Silva’s A cabra não é cega (the she-goat isn’t blind) (1976).
«Portugal Ano Zero» is one of the 45 projects supported by the “Art for Democracy” programme, an initiative of the Commemorative Commission for the 50th anniversary of April 25, in partnership with the Directorate-General for the Arts.
