This constellation of imaginary landscapes rooted in reality highlights the serial processes that characterise the artist’s work, whilst foregrounding the energetic and poetic force of each piece, particularly his latest large-format works. Distilling some of the key aspects of lyrical abstraction and colour field painting, Costa’s oeuvre also conveys an architectural sensibility through elaborate spatial compositions that combine formal, geometric, and graphic elements. Driven by a dynamic, fruitful tension between contrasting forces, his pictorial universe balances rational structures with sensory impressions, while also merging two strands of abstraction with a pop vein and vestiges of figuration. The exhibition thus invites the viewer into a threefold exercise of recognition, free association, and contemplation.

flx_lyt__text_small

Katherine Sirois trained in Art History in Montreal and Paris, Katherine Sirois is a Lisbon-based curator whose practice explores the intersections of contemporary art, art history, and the history of ideas.
