The Paralela Cultures exhibition presents works by thirty-one artists who have been blurring the boundaries between the domain of outsider art and the artistic system dedicated to modern and contemporary art. The first section of the exhibition brings together works by eight “classic” artists of brut art, identified by Jean Dubuffet, later developing into thematic groups, brought together by mainly formal associations, with works from different geographies and historical moments: fictional architectures, codes and symbols, stories and allegories, creatures, animals and portraits.

All the works on display are from the Treger Saint Silvestre (TSS) collection created in Paris in the 1980s by António Saint Silvestre and Richard Treger, in long-term storage at the Centro de Arte Oliva in S. João da Madeira.

Parallel Cultures corresponds to a second moment of reflection, developed jointly with the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto, starting in November 2022 with the holding of the international seminar that had the same title. The motto of this program is to promote knowledge and research into the still little known and studied field of art brut/outsider in Portugal.
