Sérgio Fernandes: Fundo sem fundo [Sérgio Fernandes: Endless depths]
18 june — 2 october 2022
Curator: Andreia Magalhães

Fundo sem fundo [Endless depths] presents more than thirty paintings created by Sérgio Fernandes in the framework of an artistic and research project dedicated to colour and visual perception. The exhibition displays works produced between 2021 and 2022, during the residency organised between his atelier and the Centro de Arte Oliva during which he extended work that he has been developing within the field of abstract painting, solely using a reduced chromatic range, concentrating primarily on reds, violets, blues and dark greens. The large rectangular compositions are structured in different areas of colour, that reveal effects of greater density or more atmospheric elements, involving almost imperceptible transitions. The spectator can see the result of the interaction of the pigments and the overlapping of different layers of colours and glazing, that give rise to other colours, which change in function of the light that falls on them and the spectator’s position.

The exhibition is supported by DGARTES/Portuguese Republic. Held in partnership with the Art Center of S. João da Madeira/Associação Alão de Morais.
