Intersticial: Diálogos no Espaço entre Acontecimentos I – Arte portuguesa na Coleção Norlinda e José Lima [Interstitial: Dialogues in the Space between Events I – Portuguese Art in the Norlinda and José Lima Collection]
24 may — 7 october 2018
Curator: Miguel von Hafe Pérez

Intersticial: Diálogos no Espaço entre Acontecimentos I e II, curated by Miguel von Hafe Pérez, features a vast selection of works by Portuguese artists whose oeuvre spans a period from 1971 to 2014. In the words of the curator the project ‘proposes a re-reading of the Norlinda and José Lima Collection. To think the art object as event points not only to the philosophical plane (in which Heidegger’s or Deleuze’s readings of art as event are crucial) but also as a possibility of looking at artistic proposals as complex meaning structures. The purely visual event is confronted with a series of alterity-events that may prove pertinent at the level of social and political history, the circumstances of coeval system of representation, institutional articulation systems and critical reception systems. As entities that float in a mutant grid, the juxtaposition of complementary or contradictory energies represented by the simple placing side by side of works from different epochs and by different authors points to an interpretative space that those voids claim with the intensity that the centralizing gaze of the work in itself may sometimes demand. In the continuous dialogue between these passages there is sometimes a more effective learning of singularity in diversity. Such is one of the aims, and greatest challenges, of producing a group exhibition: the possibility of a discursive articulation that may come about in the voids, the spaces in-between, so that the gaze may be permeable to thought’.

Three sculptures, of which one is a machine and the other is a stage-set. We will find brothers and sisters for the works, to counter the orphan status that pervades them in a collection. They must not be amicable to one another! Let us talk of their lives once they leave the igneous hands that shaped them…if any hands were involved at all…
